Box Jumps

Today was max effort box jumps at the station for a “warm up.” This pic shows the highest one I got. Jay, Gary and I all played around with this together. What a great time! This was just one more way to test our athletic ability. More importantly it was a test of will. As the box got higher and higher you could see the doubt creep into the jumpers face as he approached the box. The question was not only could you make the jump, but if you failed how do you do so without bloody shins. There was definitely an element of fear involved. I found myself wanting to not look at the box too much before jumping. I just wanted to step up and surprise myself so I didn’t get mental. I forced myself to stop and think about it because overcoming the mental part of it was as important as the physical. Later that day a firefighter from another station asked me what was the best thing I have gained in three years of CrossFitting. The first thing that came to mind was the mental toughness. It has changed my outloook on life and what I can do. Things that used to stress me out no longer do. I relish the challenges and it is experiences like the one I had in my warm up today that have fostered that. Don’t always do things you are comfortable with. Seek things that scare and challenge you and conquer them.
