Drinking Your Calories Part 1-Kombucha
I often get asked the question during a nutrition conversation, “What should I drink?” Usually, my pat answer is water and pretty much only water. As of late, however, I am beginning to change that answer. This short series of blog posts will review some of the best and worst of the beverage industry. Kombucha is a fermented tea made by soaking and fermenting a Kombucha mushroom. Touted in Asian cultures for its medicinal qualities, it has just recently become more popular here in the States. Due to the fermentation process it has many similar probiotic qualities to yogurt. These bacteria enhance the flora or bacteria in your gut boosting digestion, immunity and many other areas of health. Be careful of the brand and type that you get. They can contain anywhere from 2 to 20 grams of sugar per bottle. Obviously, the lower the sugar content the better. The original flavor pictured above on the left is quite tasty and is on the lower end of the sugar scale. It reminds me of a mild, less sweet sparkling cider. So if you must have something other than water give this beverage a try for a healthy change. Fred Meyer has it for a reasonable price.
