John’s Muscle Up!

John has been CrossFitting for a couple years and had yet to conquer the Muscle Up. In the past couple months since he came to CFS he has a had a renewed focus on nutrition and has also felt the power of the CFS community spurring him on to greater fitness. These two new elements incorporated into his training are what John credits with many of his recent PRs and milestones. I think it might have something to do with his hard work too! Nice work John and thanks for being such a positive part of our community. Post thoughts on how pretty John’s Muscle Ups are to comments.

  1. John made the multiple muscle ups look easy. I know most people do a couple and are happy with that. John goes off and does three or four in a row then does sets of three in a wod to follow it up. Great effort John!
ps a two week break from WODs and then 300 squats and running make your legs SORE. Come on baking soda wrap kick in!

  2. Nice MU John!

  3. Total piece of cake! Incredible! You make hanging on with a false grip even look easy. Congrats.

  4. Cheers John! Well done.

Though I have a question as I’m still kind of a newbie to CrossFit. With John and Casey’s recent achievements… am I supposed to curtsy when greeting them? :)

  5. A picture of efficiency John… great transition!

  6. Machine!

Congrats on the muscle up John. Today it looked like you have been doing them for a while now.

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. It is weird how ‘easy’ (relatively) the muscle-up seems once everything comes together. Its kind of like a magic trick. I always had so much trouble with the transition at the top. Once I could pull myself past that point it was easy. Jeff had me do negative muscle-ups a few times during WODs with muscle-ups during the last couple of months. I really think those negatives made a big difference in helping me finally get one.

  9. Rx’d: 11:30 (35 seconds faster than the last time)

  10. Didn’t hear my alarm clock this morning so I had to do this WOD at the local gym….=(

They didn’t have an abmat, but they did have a GHD so I was set on sit ups..

    Time completed – 20:32

John – Your muscle ups are ridiculously awesome!! Your hard work definitely payed off.. You know what they say – Every time somebody gets their first muscle up @ CFS, an angel gets their wings=)

    Bravo, John!!

See you guys in a few!!!

My weakness/fault/laziness is that I often take too long of a break inbetween pullup/dips/hspu/uncomfortable sets.
I am quite please with today as I felt like I (finally) kept the breaks to a minimum and restarted pull-ups while still huffing and puffing, allowing only whatever time the muscles needed, not my comfort.

    • Shawn, I think that’s a weakness most of us have. In most cases I think its more mental than physical, but its hard to push past that when you feel like you’re already redlining.

      • What Casey and Shawn said – Amen! I fight with that too. OPT has a saying that goes something like “Get comfortable with the uncomfortable”. I have always understood that to mean recognizing the difference between when you can’t do one more rep and when your mind is just telling you to stop, and then pushing yourself farther into that ‘mind pain’ zone each WOD.

    • I hear you on this….I do it too.
I think Casey and John are right – it is more mental.

One thing that I try to do is only allow myself 3 deep breaths and then go…I don’t always do it but I do try to keep that as my little goal. It can help…

  12. John,
    I owe you a shirt.

Oh, and your MU was pretty good too. :) Keep up the GREAT work!
